Fit To Die

On the planet Dion, food is scarce. When colonists arrived 100 years ago, they discovered the pods sent to terraform the planet had malfunctioned. Instead of a fully habitable world, they found only a small patch of land in which to liveand grow their food.

With only enough food to sustain a tenth of the colony, people began to starve. But a group of brave colonists stepped up to receive a genetic modification that would allow them to extract nutrition from food more efficiently. The nutrition could then be suctioned out of these people and distributed to others via a pill, and society was split into Eaters and Non-Eaters. Eaters get to enjoy as much food as they can consume—but it costs them years off their lives due to the damage done to their organs.
